Arab Americans: Honoring and Recognizing Their Contribution to the Fabric of Society

Arab Americans have made significant contributions to all aspects of American society. This ranges from politics, science and business to art, sports and entertainment.

Arab American Heritage Month is an opportunity to educate the general public about Arab American culture and history.

American Arabs come from a wide range of origins, including countries such as Lebanon, Palestine, Syria, Egypt, and Iraq. They speak different languages, practice different religions, and have unique traditions and customs.

Arab Americans have made significant contributions to American society.

They have excelled in fields such as medicine, science, and the arts.

They have also played an important role in shaping American culture, some of the leading representatives of the Arab American community in the US are:

• James Zogby: Founder of the Arab American Institute (AAI), which promotes political participation, has worked to combat anti-Arab and anti-Muslim sentiment in the United States.
• Helen Thomas: Lebanese-American journalist who was the first woman member of the White House Press Corps, critical of US foreign policy in the Middle East.
• Ralph Nader: Lebanese-American attorney and advocate for consumers, environmental protection, and corporate responsibility.
• Rashida Tlaib: Palestinian American politician who became the first Muslim woman elected to the US Congress in 2018, a strong supporter of progressive politics.
• Linda Sarsour: Palestinian American activist known for her work on civil rights issues, including the Black Lives Matter movement and the Women’s March.
• Ilhan Omar – Somali American politician who became the first Somali American elected to the US Congress in 2018.

Some Arab Americans and its contributions 

The Arab-American community in the United States is a diverse and vibrant group of people who have made significant contributions in various fields, including sports, science, and the arts.

Athletes:

One of the best-known Arab-American athletes is Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who is of Lebanese descent. He is considered one of the greatest basketball players and has been a prominent activist for civil rights and social justice.

Another prominent Arab-American athlete is Rami Malek, of Egyptian descent, who rose to fame for his portrayal of Freddie Mercury in the biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody.”

Scientists:

Arab-Americans have also made significant contributions to science and technology in the United States.

Dr. Elias A. Zerhouni, of Algerian descent, served as director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) from 2002 to 2008. During his tenure, he implemented several initiatives aimed at improving public health and promoting research scientific.

Another notable Arab-American scientist is Dr. Huda Zoghbi, of Lebanese descent, he is a neurologist and geneticist who discovered the gene responsible for Rett Syndrome, a rare neurological disorder that primarily affects girls.

Artists:

Helen Zughaib, of Lebanese descent, is a painter and artist. Her art explores themes of identity, displacement, and the experiences of Arab Americans in the United States.

Mona Hatoum, of Palestinian descent, an installation artist and video artist, deals with themes of displacement, exile and the human condition.

It is an opportunity to raise awareness of these challenges and work toward a more inclusive and equitable society.

As well as highlight the similarities between the Arab and American cultures, as they share many values and beliefs such as a strong work ethic, a commitment to family and the belief in the importance of education.
